Top Nerve Supplements For Adults 45 and Older

A Guide To Finding the Best Supplement to Support Aging or Sensitive Nerves & Reduce Nerve Related Discomfort or Numbness

Updated Tuesday, October 4, 2022

Did it start with a tingling sensation in your hands or feet? Maybe you felt like your sock was bunching up under your feet, only to remove your shoe and find that wasn’t the case?

Everyone is different, of course, but that’s how it starts for a lot of people. When your nerves aren’t communicating like they used to, strange things can start happening. And perhaps what started as a minor annoyance has become something bigger. Something that you can no longer ignore.

Maybe the “tingling” has morphed into sharp pains or jolts that shoot through your body without warning. Perhaps you’ve become sensitive to touch - where something as gentle as a cotton bedsheet that brushes against your skin can leave you wincing in pain (and keeps you up all night).

Or maybe you’re dealing with a loss of feeling in the extremities. Your hands or feet feel “dead” or numb, affecting your balance or mobility and robbing you of your independence.

So, what can you do about it?

A good place to start is with a few specific vitamins & nutrients that support nerve health and communication as you age. By promoting healthy nerve function, these ingredients can help to reduce the effects of ailing nerves….so you can get back to living a happy & healthy life.

A healthy diet is a great way to get these vitamins and nutrients, but diets can be hard to maintain. To make up for any deficiencies in your diet, another way to fuel your nerves is with a daily nerve supplement.

When taken consistently, a quality nerve supplement (with the right ingredients), can help…

  • • Support faster, crystal clear nerve communication by building nerve fiber density

  •
  • • Reduce nerve sensitivity by repairing and maintaining the protective coating around nerves

  •
  • • Nourish nerves by improving blood flow to the extremities

  •
  • • Enhance nerve function by regenerating aged or damaged nerves & maintaining healthy nerves

  •
  • But with so many different supplements on the market, it can be hard to separate the good from the bad.

Which is why we asked Dr. Don Kennedy, a trusted physician with over 40 years practicing geriatric medicine in Florida, to look at some of the most popular nerve support supplements and give us his expert opinion - so you can find the one that’s right for you.

Dr. Kennedy's 7-Point Ranking System

Dr. Kennedy's 7-Point Ranking System

When choosing a nerve supplement, just going with any off-the-shelf unknown supplement doesn't cut it.

To rank the nerve supplements below, Dr. Kennedy used a proven 7-point ranking system to test and compare all of the products. Here's how the ranking system works:

1. Product quality based on active ingredients, dosage and sourcing.

2. Manufacturer upholds high quality assurance protocols.

3. The science, research and development behind the product's active ingredients.

4. Company reputation - including BBB rating, customer complaints, etc.

5. Customer reviews – removing fake/paid reviews so only real opinions count.

6. Price/Value. Is it worth the money?

7. Return policy and money back guarantee.

Dr. Kennedy’s Nerve Supplement “Must Haves”

Transparent Labeling - Detailed ingredients labels that show every ingredient present.

Proven Ingredients - Well known and tested ingredients shown to be effective.

Cost - Clear and upfront pricing that won’t cause buyers remorse.

Guarantee - A reputable company should have a guarantee it stands by.

Watch Out For These Red Flags...

Knock-Off Ingredients - Avoid supplements that use cheap knock-offs of key ingredients.

Ineffective Doses of Active Ingredients - Avoid supplements that have low doses of key ingredients (like B12, Alpha Lipoic Acid, etc). Higher doses are often required for effective results.

Unproven Ingredients - Watch out for products that make big claims about new and exciting ingredients without research to back them up.

Pros:

Uses optimal forms of B vitamins & Alpha Lipoic Acid

Contains Acetyl-l-carnitine, which may be beneficial to nerve health

365 day guarantee

Cons:

Only 2,000 mcg Vitamin B12 (half of what’s in Nerve Renew)

Only 154 customer reviews with an avg rating of 3.5 out of 5 stars (at the time of this article publishing)

No feverfew herbal extract (a potent herb that acts as a pain reliever)

Not Accredited with Better Business Bureau (BBB also notes a pattern of complaints with this company)

The Bottom Line:

Nerve Regen seems to be a fairly good product, with a few flaws.

We like that their formula contains the optimal forms of Vitamin B12, B1, and Stabilized R-Alpha Lipoic Acid. They also added Acetyl-L-Carnitine, an ingredient with some promising potential for nerve health & discomfort.

The biggest concern with their ingredients is the low dosage of Vitamin B12, at only 2,000mcg. As one of the most important ingredients, it would be better if there were double that. Most studies show only ultra-high doses of B12 (as methylcobalamin) have a meaningful effect on nerves.

The other red flags with Nerve Regen come from their customer ratings and Better Business Bureau report. With only 154 customer ratings, it appears they may be new in the nerve supplement space. Their average star rating of 3.5/5 is decent, but well below other nerve supplements.

Finally, we were concerned about their “F” rating and lack of accreditation on the Better Business Bureau’s website. There were also 3 alerts posted to the company overview page on the BBB website with notes that the BBB has noticed a pattern of complaints about this company.

Pros:

High dose of R-Alpha Lipoic Acid (300mg)

2,500+ customer reviews with solid star rating (4.6/5)

Cons:

Uses a mix of R-ALA & S-ALA (some studies suggest that S-ALA may inhibit the therapeutic benefits of R-ALA on nerves)

This is only an Alpha Lipoic Acid supplement. Does not contain other vitamins & nutrients that can support nerve health & reduce discomfort.

Refunds only accepted within 60 days of purchase (it typically takes 3-6 months for most to notice results with nerve supplements, so a 60-day return window seems to short)

15% restocking fee on orders over $200

The Bottom Line:

We love that Dr. Danielle’s Alpha Lipoic Acid supplement has a great customer rating and a strong dose of Alpha Lipoic Acid (550mg)!

This would be a great supplement to add to your regimen if you’re already taking a high quality B-vitamin supplement.

The only downside is that instead of using only R-Alpha Lipoic Acid (the most optimal form of ALA), this supplement has a mix of 250mg of S-ALA (synthetic form of Alpha Lipoic Acid) and 300mg R-ALA.

The problem with using a mix is that S-ALA may actually inhibit the most essential properties of R-ALA.19

According to a 2019 peer-reviewed analysis of various studies on ALA, “The R enantiomer of ALA shows better pharmacokinetic parameters, including increased bioavailability as compared to its S enantiomer.” The analysis further states that S-ALA “stops the important activities of R-ALA, e.g., their interaction with genes, enzymes and proteins.”20

Pros:

Over 700 customer reviews

Unique ingredients

Cons:

Limited scientific support for some ingredients

No B vitamins or Alpha Lipoic Acid

Only a 90 Day Money Back Guarantee

3.6 out of 5 star customer rating

“B-” rating on Better Business Bureau (with 33 complaints)

The Bottom Line:

This is an interesting nerve supplement that seems to work for some people. It consists of 5 “plant-based” ingredients: Marshmallow Root, Passionflower, Corydalis Powder, Prickly Pear, and California Poppy Seed.

Their Amazon listing claims these ingredients help support and soothe the central and somatosensory systems. And while we’re intrigued by the ingredients, we found the scientific evidence to back the ingredients claims to be lacking.

For example, one the evidence page for their primary ingredient (Marshmallow Root), they don’t link to any peer-reviewed studies. Instead, the supporting evidence is from RXlist.com and Healthline.com - which should not be considered as proof. In our own search, we were unable to find any credible studies on the effectiveness of this ingredient for nerve health.

We also found the cost to be quite high given the lack of proven ingredients like Vitamin B12, B1, B6, and Alpha Lipoic Acid.

5. Nervive Nerve Health Supplement

5. Nervive Nerve Health Supplement

Overall Ingredient Rating ( i )

Ingredient Quality ( i )

Ingredient Dosage ( i )

Value ( i )

Guarantee ( i )

Customer Satisfaction ( i )

*Results are based on Nerve Renew's Ranking System and do not necessarily reflect typical results from the use of these products. Please visit product websites for more information.

Pros:

Available in select stores

Good customer rating

Cons:

Uses less effective forms of Vitamin B12 & B1 (don’t absorb as well)

Not enough Vitamin B12 (only 24mcg…studies show nerves need ultra-high dose of around 4,000mcg to repair nerve insulation)

No Vitamin B2 (which can help improve absorption of other vitamins)

3.6 out of 5 star customer rating

Could not find a satisfaction guarantee/return policy

The Bottom Line:

On the surface, Nervive appears to be a good choice - and its reviews would suggest that customers like it. In addition to some quality ingredients, it is available in select stores throughout the United States.

But a careful analysis reveals a few red flags to be aware of before you run out and buy it.

The first area of concern is that it uses the cheaper and less effective forms of Vitamins B12 (cyanocobalamin) and B1 (Thiamine). Most clinical studies showing the benefits of these vitamins for nerve health use B12 as Methylcobalamin and B1 as Benfotiamine. That’s likely because these forms are more easily absorbed by the body.

In addition to using the cheaper form of B12 - the dosage is only 24mcg. That’s significantly lower than the “utlra-high” doses of B12 (4,000mcg or more) that studies suggest are required to have any real benefit on sensitive nerves.

This formula also lacks Vitamin B2 - which can help train your body to absorb other nutrients better.

Lastly, while it has a great customer rating and over 3,000 reviews, a careful analysis found that a number of reviewers indicated they received the product as part of a promotion in exchange for a review. This could skew the rating to be slightly higher than it would be otherwise.
