Two Simple At-Home Tests to Check Your Nerve Function

Before you begin, grab a partner to help you and remove socks/shoes so you can test your bare feet and lower legs.
Test #1: Light-Touch Sensation (Paintbrush Test)
This test checks whether the small sensory fibers in your feet and legs are still sending signals to your brain.
How to do it:
- Lie comfortably on your back.

Have your partner lightly stroke different areas of your feet and lower legs using:
- A soft watercolor paintbrush or
- A crumpled tissue (a good substitute if you don’t have a brush)

Each time they touch your skin, simply say:
- “Yes” if you feel it
- “No” if you don’t
- “Weaker on this side” if one foot feels duller than the other
What this test tells you:
If the soft touch feels faint, inconsistent, or completely absent, it’s a sign that the small nerve fibers responsible for detecting gentle sensation may be impaired or “quiet.”
Test #2: Sharp–Dull Sensation (Toothpick Test)
This test measures how well your nerves can detect sharper, more defined input — another important part of healthy nerve signaling.
How to do it:

Using a clean toothpick, have your partner gently tap or poke different spots on your:
- Toes
- Foot pad
- Outer edges of the feet
- Lower legs
- Arms & hands
- Signals shouldn’t hurt — just feel distinct and clear.

- “Sharp”
- “Dull”
- “Can’t feel it”
- Or “Different than the other side”
What this test tells you:
If the toothpick feels barely noticeable, strangely dull, or uneven from one side to the other, it may indicate reduced nerve function or early nerve damage.
